Multipurpose Cold Potable Water/Fire Sprinkler System
There are two options when designing a plumbing system and a fire sprinkler system for one- and two-family homes. The systems can be designed as separate systems or combined in a single, multipurpose system.
Installing a plumbing system separate from a fire sprinkler system in one- and two-family dwellings ensures the integrity of each stand-alone system. A multipurpose system, as defined by NFPA 13D, is a piping system within dwellings and manufactured homes intended to service both domestic cold water and fire protection needs. Multipurpose systems have the potential for reducing material and labor costs. When installing a multipurpose system, it is important to maintain the integrity of both systems.
